The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) has released an important new clinical publication that marks real progress for the UK medical cannabis sector.
Medical Cannabis Oils: Dosing and Guidance for Safe and Effective Treatment in Adults and Children has been edited by Dr Evan Cole Lewis and Dr Rowan Thompson, who have brought together a clear, thoughtful and accessible guide designed to support clinicians in prescribing cannabis oils safely and confidently.
The sector has long needed a resource like this.
Until now, prescribers often relied on scattered papers, international references or word of mouth to shape their approach to dosing. The new MCCS guide brings everything into one place. It offers structured advice on starting treatment, adjusting doses, monitoring patients and understanding common clinical scenarios. The editors have taken great care to balance evidence, experience and practicality, which makes the guide suitable for both new and established prescribers.
What stands out is the commitment to clarity. The guide explains not just what to do, but why, helping clinicians understand the thinking behind each recommendation. This level of transparency builds confidence, improves safety and promotes consistency across clinics. It also acts as a bridge for those who work within more traditional areas of medicine and may still be uncertain about cannabinoid prescribing.
The publication is more than a handbook. It is a sign of a maturing field. By setting shared standards, the MCCS has helped reinforce the message that medical cannabis in the UK is developing in a responsible and coordinated way. This benefits patients, strengthens public trust and supports the ongoing professionalisation of the sector.
Marika Graham-Woods, Managing Director of the CTA, said:
“This guide arrives at exactly the right moment for the UK medical cannabis community. Clear, standardised dosing protocols are essential if we want to improve clinical confidence, patient outcomes and the credibility of the sector. The work by Dr Lewis and Dr Thompson gives prescribers the structure they need to practise safely and consistently. It strengthens the foundation of the entire field and supports our shared commitment to evidence-based, patient-centred care.”
This new publication is a welcome addition to the resources available to clinicians and to the wider community working to advance safe, professional medical cannabis access in the UK.
